Artist Statement

I concentrate on compiling my footage into a digital collage telling a story about people, culture, and the endurance required to live in an undeveloped world.  While directing a film, I devote my energy to producing a story that gives my audience the power to relate  to people from a variety of backgrounds while simultaneously celebrating their differences.  Our modern world is economically connected through free trade and corporate globalization.  I strive for a way to allow people living tens of thousands of miles apart to partake in a more ethnological understanding of one another and encouraging a more human connection than macro economics offers.  There is a deep misunderstanding of the connections binding people living in developed countries and undeveloped countries.  By living in a wealthy yet geographically isolated nation like the U.S., our ability to connect our luxury to the "third world" is hindered.  Nearly half of the world's population lives on less than two U.S. dollars a day, enabling a small percentage of people to live beyond our means.  My time in undeveloped regions throughout the world has contributed to a deeper understanding of my relationship to this story.  I spent several years struggling to generate awareness of this dynamic and awareness through several creative media including writing, photography and painting.  I finally came to accept that film screenings are the most efficient way to expose communities to important topics.  My choice to put down the paintbrush has allowed me to utilize the boundries of the lens to broaden my personal horizons of trans-cultural understanding and communication.
